About ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS (EMF): The Invisible Disease

The Term EMF refers to Electromagnetic Fields. It is a form of non-ionizing radiation that consist of Electric fields and Magnetic fields. An Electric field are created by differences in voltage and its strength is measured in Volts per meter (V/m). A Magnetic Field is created when an electric current flows and is measured in amperes per meter (A/m).

The inter-relationship between this fields and its characteristics requires an in-depth understanding of physics theory which shall be discussed in a later post. For now, we are more concern of is its lurking dangers and the protection we require.

 

The INVISIBLE DISEASE caused by EMF

There is scientific evidence that electromagnetic fields have direct negative short-term effects on the human organism. When the fields impacts upon a material, it interacts with the atoms and molecules in that material. Similarly, as the fields gets transmitted into our biological body, it causes an induced electric fields in our bodies that will potentially affect our health. But How?

Firstly, the induced electric field in our body exerts force on both polarized molecules (mainly water molecules) and on free moving charged particles such as electrons and ions. This cause the charged particles to move as current in our bodies which gets converted to heat energies. A good example of how this principle works is the microwave oven. Food can be heated through subjecting it to an electromagnetic radiation where the radiation is strong enough for the food to get cook by absorbing high frequency radiation. The same effect can take place in the human body and such induced heat in our body can affect our health in a number of ways.

Secondly, if the induced electric fields is strong and brief enough, it can exert electrical forces that are sufficient to stimulate nerves, or to cause dielectric breakdown of our biological membranes.

When we are exposed to chronic levels of EMF radiation, even if it is in the low frequency, we can start experiencing health problems like the following:

While the above can harm all people, Kids and Pregnant ladies should be even more cautious of their EMF exposures. This is because children skin and bones are thinner plus their tissues have more water which results into higher absorption of EMF radiation than adults. As for pregnant ladies, studies on animals have shown that EMF can harm the growth of the babies:

So where do EMF occur?

Living in this modern tech savvy world, it is almost impossible that you are not yet exposed to it. EMF occurs almost everywhere from your daily electronic devices like

  • Power lines along the roads,
  • Satellite Communications systems
  • Telecommunication Systems

EMF are emitted from all the above as an invisible form of energy that penetrates our bodies unknowingly, making it almost 100% unavoidable. Generally, higher level of exposures is expected on employees who are located in occupational areas near radar antennas, broadcasting and cellular phone transmitters (e.g. during maintenance work), or industrial plant that is used for smelting or welding using high frequency energies.

However, what is important to note here is, if you work in these areas, or your employees work in these areas, what are the level of exposure to this EMF radiation? And what we do to protect ourselves.

To help avoid damage to human health as a result of EMF exposure, organizations such as the Internal Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) have authored a number of different international guidelines and standards. The ICNIRP is a non-governmental organization comprising of independent scientist from the whole world and works closely with the World Health Organization (WHO). Apart from the ICNIRP, there are also other versions of standards & regulations such as IEEE, FCC or Safety Code 6 Regulations. Different countries may have different approaches to the limits stipulated in the various regulations, standards, norms and recommendations and one will need to check the limits of standards they are adhering to accordingly.

Additional Functions of the Nardalert S3 VS RadMan / RadMan XT

Other than the above functions, the Nardalert S3 is capable of deployed as a Fixed Area Monitoring Application. It can be continuously powered through their USB interface while field levels are read through the fiber optic interface. Optional NEMA 4X enclosures and solar panels are also available for outdoor installations, as well as longer (>50m) cable solutions. The NBM-580 provides powerful alarm interface capabilities when employing multiple sensor for a stand-alone monitoring system.

The RadMan / RadMan XT consist of a detachable cap to provide isotropic response for monitoring signals apart from the body. In other words, it can be transformed by connecting a non-conductive extension handle (optional accessory) to be used as an instrument for leak detection. This will come in handy for personnel trying to isolate or find out source of RF emissions in any directions.

 

Making EMF Protection a Priority

EMF may be a reality in each of our days – but EMF protection can be just as much of a reality. Apart from the personal device shared above, following are some other possible preventive measures:

  • Having a Fixed EMF Measurement System. (Just as the NBM-580)
  • Ensuring proper locks, shielding or enclosures.
  • Warning Signs of Exceeded EMF Levels 
  • Entering Hazardous area during lower EMF emissions (during low system utilization or complete system shutdown)
  • Wear protective gear
  • Wear personal monitoring devices with alerts
